There are many opinions when it comes to clipping your parrots wings and truly there is no right or wrong answer however it should really be considered why you own a animal that fly's if you choose to clip its wings.

Flying is only natural for your parrot, it gives them means to escape from predators and travel to new areas in the wild. When you clip a birds wings you are stopping them from having the freedom to flee.

Some negatives to wing clipping parrots are:

  • If done incorrectly the feathers may never grow back the same or you may permanently disable your bird.

  • Even if clipped correctly you run the risk of your bird never learning how to fly properly especially if clipped from a young age.

  • Clipping means less excersise for the bird and low stamina levels. They will be more prone to obesity from lack of muscle use.

Some people may argue they needed to clip the bird for the first few months they owned it because they had to tame the bird. My answer to that is with persistence, patience and correct training there is no need to force your bird to step up onto your hand. If you are clipping your bird just to make it unable to get away from your than you will never have a trusting mutual relationship. They will only come to you because they have no choice. When owning a parrot there should always be options and choices!

This is my opinion and having 2 birds of my own that are not tame I still am making working progress with them. If you are looking for help on taming your parrot then get on touch 😄
