Read how you can enrich your birds life!

Two very important things to provide your bird(s) is some form of stimulation through training and enrichment. There are many items you can give your bird to stimulate natural behiavours. Behiavours we want to stimulate are foraging techniques, flying, bathing, preening and the use of auditory, visual, taste, tactile and olfactory senses.Buying parrot toys from pet stores are some of the ways you can achieve this; however I personally find them very expensive for something that last a day or two. Therefore I try to find easier and more accessable ways to give my enrichment. Firstly take all your recycling most of it is all cardboard pieces. Parrots love to shred so using your own household cardboard is a cheap and great way of recycling. A cardboard box with newspaper and browse inside is something birds love and beats any shop brought items. This brings me onto my next point is natural untreated and safe browse. I find myself when I'm out walking my dog often cutting small branches and leaves of the trees. I can then chop them up and give them in a box or dangle them in the cage for some great chewing. This will work on your birds feet and beak, keeping it in great condition. Always make sure the plant material you collect is safe for your bird to chew. Training can be difficult especially if your bird has no interest in you; however it does not mean they are untrainable. Teaching parrots things takes a lot of time they are not like a dog that always wants to please. Parrots are stubborn and need a patient owner, so when teaching birds new things start of small for example #clickertraining. This is a form of #positivereinforcement where your bird will receive a treat when you click the clicker. The bird will associate the #behaviour it just performed as doing the right thing to get a treat. Parrots are so trainable that you can even teach them free flight allowing them to perform natural flying abilities. They will always come back to you because of your strong bond and connection. To achieve something like this you will need experience in training parrots and should never be done without guidance and by a professional. However in the end the amazing things you can do can be so rewarding. If your thinking of teaching your parrot a behaviour or want to understand how you can provide more #training and #enrichment for your bird then get in touch 😁
